Breastfeeding Tips
Tips for Breastfeeding Success
How Often to Breastfeed
- Feed your baby on cue—at least every 2–3 hours for newborns (typically 8–12 times in 24 hours).
- Begin feeding when your baby shows early hunger signs and offer both breasts at each feeding.

🤱 Getting a Good Latch
- Align your baby’s nose with your nipple in any breastfeeding position.
- When your baby opens wide, bring them
to your breast—avoid pushing the breast into the baby’s mouth.

✅ Signs Your Baby Is Feeding Well
- You can
see and hear your baby swallow.
- Your breasts feel
softer or less full after a feed.
- Your baby appears satisfied: straight arms, open hands, relaxed or “milk drunk.”
- Frequent
wet and dirty diapers.
🛠️ If Breastfeeding Is Challenging
- It’s okay to supplement with your expressed milk, donor milk, or formula if needed.
- Pumping can provide milk for your baby and help build your milk supply - use an electric pump on both sides for
15 minutes every 3 hours, or as close to every 3 hours as possible.
- Hand expression every 3 hours also works well, especially in the first week before your milk transitions to mature milk.

- If breastfeeding is painful or seems not quite right, consider seeing a lactation consultant (IBCLC) for expert support.
